BeSecure-FeelSecure (BSFS): The case study on urban security of Piraeus at the 9th Security Project 2022 Conference.

The European project BeSecure-FeelSecure (BSFS) of the Municipality of Piraeus, was presented as an example of innovation for the holistic management of urban security at the 9th Security Project 2022 Conference.

With central theme “Empowering Security Transformation” in the new era, the 9th hybrid Security Project Conference was organized by Smart Press and the “Security Manager” magazine at the Divani Caravel Hotel.

During a dedicated BSFS session under the theme: “Implementation of Security Projects and Protection of Critical Infrastructures and Smart Cities with Strategies for the Utilization of Modern Technologies”, the technical manager of BSFS from Space Hellas, Mr. Marios Zacharias, presented the BSFS case study.

Mr. Zacharias analyzed the “Collaborative Urban Risk Management Platform” – CURiM, a “smart” tool which allows the collection and utilization of data for the development of sustainable solutions and practices for addressing threats on a physical and digital level.

The Deputy Mayor of Public Health & Social Services and President of the Local Council for Crime Prevention (LCCP), Mrs. Kyriaki Bourdakou. In her speech analyzed the methods and tools that the Municipality of Piraeus uses, in order to formulate a social anti-crime policy that is based on three main pillars: prevention, information and awareness.

Mrs. Bourdakou also referred to the role of the LCCP in supporting the Municipal Authority in decision-making for risk prevention, through research, training and the use of “smart” tools, such as the “Collaborative Urban Risk Management Platform – CURiM”. At the same time, understanding and supporting people who have fallen victims of any form of violence is a priority of the Municipal Authority, in the effort of reducing insecurity and fear.

Finally, Ms. Bourdakou stressed out that the development of solutions following the modern CPTED model (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” and the adapted policy with basic principles of safety awareness and social care, are among the main objectives of the LCCP.

The Authorized Advisor of the Municipal Police, Mr. Tassos Markarian, spoke on the issue of security and the innovative interventions that BeSecure-FeelSecure project (BSFS) implements in city of Piraeus. Through urban planning, the goal is to enhance urban security and increase the safety feeling of the residents and visitors of Piraeus.

Mr. Markarian also referred to the significant role of technology: a) in the detection and assessment of threats, b) in the utilization of crime heat maps, as well as c) in the role of cross-sectoral cooperation among the protection bodies, in fighting delinquency.

During the conference, the Deputy Mayors and the representatives of the project interacted with security and protection executives of the private and public sector and discussed about the multilevel initiative of BSFS project.
